How to play rummy on playnow: turn order, melds, drop ladder, show mechanics.
13 cards, 1 pure sequence, 1 set, 1 ready hand. The rules in order with worked examples.
Every playnow hand is 13 cards dealt face down. The aim is to arrange those 13 cards into at least one pure sequence, a second sequence (pure or impure), and a set or remaining cards.
- Pure sequence: three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, no joker.
- Impure sequence: three or more consecutive cards of the same suit using a joker.
- Set: three or four cards of the same rank, different suits.
- Invalid show: a declaration without at least one pure sequence.

- Deal. 13 cards each. One card is flipped face-up (open pile); the rest form the closed pile. The player to the right of the dealer starts.
- Draw. On your turn, take one card, from the top of the closed pile, or the top of the open pile.
- Meld or arrange. Group your hand into sequences and sets. The groups can sit anywhere in your hand; you do not need to announce them.
- Discard. Place one card face-up on the open pile. That ends your turn.
- Declare. When your 14 cards (13 in hand plus the new card) form a valid declaration, lay the hand face-up on the table.
| Drop type | When | Points |
|---|---|---|
| First drop | Before your third turn is over | 20 |
| Middle drop | After your third turn, before the last draw | 40 |
| Full drop | After the last draw but before you discard | 75 |
| Mis-declare | Invalid show penalty | 80 |
Verify before you play
Drop and penalty points are published by playnow in the help centre. The numbers above are the typical published values, the exact figures for your table may differ by format. Read the help-centre entry before your first deposit.

To finish a hand, your 13 cards plus the new card you just drew must form at least two sequences (one of them pure) and at least one set or remaining cards.
- Discard the new card and lay the rest face-up on the table.
- The table confirms the declaration; the score is recorded.
- If the declaration is invalid, the declaring player pays the mis-declaration penalty.
- If the declaration is valid, the declaring player scores zero; the other players count their ungrouped card values.
- Pure sequence
- Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, no joker.
- Impure sequence
- Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit using a joker.
- Set
- Three or four cards of the same rank, different suits.
- Open pile
- The face-up card on the table that anyone can pick up.
- Closed pile
- The face-down deck. The top card is taken when you draw from the closed pile.
- Drop
- Leaving the hand before you discard. The cost depends on when you drop.
- Mis-declare
- An invalid show. The declaring player pays a published penalty.
- Pool fold
- When the pool reaches its cap, the player with the highest score drops automatically.
